Your friendly neighborhood litigation attorney at Alerding Castor Hewitt, LLP with a final post for the year to all of our business, Indiana internet litigation, and technology law clients. Saturday, December 25th will no doubt be a date of celebration in many homes. As you spend time with your family, remember how special the day is and all of the changes that have taken place in the last 20 years.
Some of you might wonder what I mean exactly. I’m not referring to Christmas. And for those of you with knowledge of obscure historical events, I’m not referring to the birth of Robert Ripley (of “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not” fame) in 1890. What I’m referring to is the revelation on December 25, 1990, of the world wide web by British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee.
Prior to the web, the internet was largely an academic tool. The public masses, by and large, did not have access to it. Afterward, a technology revolution began (or continued, depending on your point of view). The web transformed the internet from the world of academia into a household tool for the average Joe to use in communication and commerce, and to really reach out and touch people all over the globe and share information.
Since then, there has been an information and technology explosion. Cell phones now come with the ability to access the internet, to tweet, to view social networks, to listen to the radio, to take and share pictures and movies – and to make phone calls for those so inclined. Likewise, televisions can be set up to use as a personal computer. And web sites have increased dramatically, with one estimate being some 200 million different sites in 2010.
All of this technology naturally brings with it concerns such as compliance with internet law, privacy litigation, software litigation, and trademark disputes (just to name a few). As with any other legal matter in life, trained and experienced legal professionals are available to assist you with those issues. But those things aside, the marvel of technology in general and the web in particular – and what makes both so exciting – is how they empower the humblest of us to share and locate information, and make us realize just how small and round the world is.
So, think about all the changes and where we might be headed in the next 20 years as you lift that glass of egg nog or spend time with your family during this season of celebration, And remember that your technology law firm friends at Alerding Castor Hewitt, LLP, who will be contemplating the same thing and how we can assist you in your success now and in the future. Here’s looking to 2011.
