I love being a business law attorney. I was meeting with Anthony Ware of S4X Ventures yesterday and telling him how thankful I am for the opportunities I have to participate in so many areas of culture by way of my position as an Indianapolis attorney. He encouraged me to blog about it - so here you go. Culture is the collective expressions which define a community. If you think of Spanish culture, for instance, you may think of certain colors, foods, music... all things that define the look and feel of a Spanish community. Culture can be shaped by arts, sports, destinations, religious practices, ceremony styles, and innovation and entrepreneurship - again, expressions which are fostered and practiced within a community.
I am fascinated by the intersection of business with culture. My desire is to see businesses in Indianapolis help create a culture in our city of innovation and creativity. A majority of my clients are in the technology and software licensing industries. These are companies that rely on innovation to succeed. They also attract creative, professional talent into our city - folks who tend to not only apply their talent in their business, but also in their community. Indianapolis needs to be less concerned with immediate "brain-drain" issues and more focused on creating an environment that encourages individual creativity. This spills into so many other areas of our city. It creates patrons for the arts - which in turn, further attracts the arts. It creates development of unique destinations (e.g., restaurants, events, stores, neighborhoods, parks...). It creates development of beauty in the city. These are things that when created, lead to a perpetual cycle of cultural development as more creative talent want to be a part of our city.
I do believe that my law firm, Alerding Castor, can have a positive impact on the culture of Indianapolis. Let's create businesses focused on innovation. Let's encourage creativity. These are things that really matter.
