Commerce and Culture - Driving Forces of Innovation

One of the more interesting blogs I subscribe to is This Blogs Sits at the Intersection of Anthropology and Economics written by Grant McCracken (click picture for link to blog site).  McCracken has an interesting post today entitled JS Mill and the Banking Crises.  Where does innovation arise from?  Is it promoted by our culture?  By commerce?  Both?  In an economic climate where government is showing more control over private commerce and holding the life line of the banking industry, is innovation compromised?  How are Indiana technology companies affected?  There is a lot to wrestle with here.
