In a previous blog entry I discussed some benefits of good business "partnering". According to Guy Kawasaki in The Art of the Start, partnerships should be built on solid business principles (e.g., accelerated cash flow, speed to market, open distribution channels...) rather than looking for good press, glamour or flattery. In considering other businesses to partner with, look for opportunities to accentuate each other's strengths (i.e., each can help the other do key initiatives better).
In markets like Indianapolis, there are many opportunities for business partnering. I have seen this work especially well with Software as a Service (SaaS) companies - which is a key market for my firm, Alerding Castor, LLP. As different SaaS companies have different core competencies in related markets, there is often room for a win-win in partnering with one another. Again, the key idea is that we are better together than apart.
